Why Sugar Mountain is the Ultimate Winter Getaway for Family Adventures

This post is sponsored by Visit NC, however, all thoughts and opinions are of my own.
Typically, when you think of skiing, or any snow sports really, you’d probably think of Colorado. Well, recently we had the opportunity to explore Sugar Mountain, NC. This hidden gem blew us away with its picturesque mountains, and charming local feel. One thing’s for sure; this is definitely worth a winter visit, and beyond! The amount of adventure this town, and surrounding, offers is incredible for families. We had a blast, and wish we’d had more time to do all the things on our list!

Where We Stayed: The Reserves at Sugar Mountain with Vacasa

The VIEWS alone at this condo were worth the visit! The snow covering the mountains was unmatched. None of us could get enough of these views! As a family of 5 this provided optimal space, with a cute loft upstairs. The provided unique crayons and fun rug made the kids feel at home. Washer and dryer provided, as well as anything you need to make your stay cozy.
Another major perk? We were just a short drive from some of the best restaurants in the area, making dining out super convenient. Also, if you forget anything, Dollar General is about 10 minutes up the road and has everything you need…including snow gear!
Where to Eat: Local Bites You’ll Love
- Banner Elk Cafe
- You’ll enjoy 2 menus in one at this après-ski themed restaurant. Located in the heart of downtown Banner Elk, you’ll choose anything from pastas, quesadillas, cozy drinks, and yummy desserts. We loved the vibe here!

- Puerto Nuevo Mexican and Seafood Restaurant
- Prepared fresh daily! We took advantage of their lunch special. This spot is quite popular, as it is just across the street from Sugar Mountain Resort. Mexican/Tex Mex dishes, and large selection of drinks! Loved their Chorizo Queso, and the kids especially loved the fries!

- Mountain Grounds Coffee & Tea
- Start your morning with a locally roasted cup of coffee, fresh breakfast sandwiches, and a large variety of pastries. This shop feels like home, and you can tell it is rooted in community. Lots to choose here for the kids as well like fruits, bagels, smoothies, and other fun snacks.

Where we played
- Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster
- This is SO MUCH FUN! Start by riding to the top of the mountain, then soar down at speeds up to 27mph (self-controlled). It’s open rain or snow. We experienced it with snow, and it added to the experience. Ages 3 (at least 38in) and up only. Reservations are strongly recommended and sometimes required! There is also a giftshop attached, so grab the kids, and littles that can’t ride, a couple of treats!

- Sugar Creek Gem Mining
- Engage and educate your kids in mining their own gems! This was the perfect activity for all three of our kids to wind down a bit. With the purchase of one bucket, they all filled their bags full with gems. Very interactive and has a store with unique candies (candy Mac & Cheese?), as well as ski gear that can be rented/purchased. Don’t forget to take a photo with the red train!

Random fact: this is also where we ran into another family that we previously met in another state at a family resort. Complete strangers, reuniting in another state. How cool is that?

- Snow Tubing at Sugar Mountain Resort
- Prepare for nonstop laughs! One of our favorite experiences was snow tubing at Sugar Mountain Resort. The kids (and let’s be honest, the adults too!) had a blast speeding down these 700ft lanes of snow and riding back up on the Magic Carpet Lift! The crisp mountain air and stunning views made it even more magical. Ages 3 and up. Reservations required. You can find Hot Chocolate, snacks, and bathrooms onsite. This is also the area for ice skating, skiing, and snowshoeing.

- Mast General Store
- No trip to the area is complete without visiting the Mast General Store in nearby Valle Crucis. Stepping inside felt like traveling back in time—wooden floors, shelves overflowing with old-fashioned candies, and lots of nostalgia. We stocked up on local jams, unique toys for the kids, and some popcorn. It’s a nostalgic stop that blends history with modern-day charm and is a great way to spend an hour of your day!

- Grandfather Mountain
- We had tickets to the park for the Mile-High Swinging Bridge, however, the park closed due to a snow storm. Located in the heart of Sugar Mountain, I would still plan to put this on your itinerary as there are MANY things to do here including hiking, the discovery center, and so many photo worthy views. We plan to head back next year and tackle all that we missed this year!
